April 2012

From the President and Secretary General

Every May the World Health Assembly (WHA) takes place at WHO headquarters in Geneva. Delegations from WHO's member states discuss a wide range of health related matters and this year prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) will be high on the agenda. As NGOs in official relations with WHO, WCPT and the other members of the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) will be present during the assembly making sure that the views of health professionals are represented. WHPA's NCD health improvement card and tool kit have been well received internationally as a practical and useful tool in raising awareness of NCDs and the role of health professionals. Such tools and the presence of WCPT with WHPA members at international events reinforce the strength and value of the collective voice.

Kind regards
Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers

WCPT database of experts

Have you previously volunteered to be on WCPT's database of experts? WCPT is currently reviewing this database to ensure its accuracy and usefulness to organisations seeking physical therapist expertise. The current database has more than 450 experts registered. However, some of the registrations are incomplete and some may be out of date.

If you have previously registered as an expert please check your entry and thereby confirm that you wish to remain on the database. Please note that any incomplete entries will be deleted at the end of May. To check your entry use your usual login on the WCPT website at www.wcpt.org/user/login and click on the Experts database tab.

If you are interested in volunteering your time and expertise to develop the profession internationally, find out how you could help at www.wcpt.org/experts.

WCPT subgroups

Paediatrics survey: the Research Committee of the WCPT subgroup, the International Organization for Physical Therapy in Paediatrics (IOPTP), is conducting a survey to obtain information about global paediatric physical therapy research activities and resources from researchers who are from countries where IOPTP has a member organisation. IOPTP is particularly seeking input from physical therapists currently involved in paediatric research to inform theory, practice, or outcomes of paediatric physical therapy. The survey is posted online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/SXJMRKQ and will be available until September 2012.

Questions regarding the survey can be directed to Anh Pham, Project Coordinator for International Research in Paediatric Physical Therapy at anh.h.pham@drexel.edu.

Older people resources: the International Association of Physical Therapists working with Older People (IPTOP) has added a new resources and information page to their website at www.wcpt.org/iptop/resources

World Health Organization

CBR global database: with community-based rehabilitation (CBR) being practiced in more than 90 countries of the world, WHO has taken the initiative to create a global database. Physical therapists who are CBR implementers and practitioners are encouraged to assist WHO to develop this global database by completing a web-based data collection form. The data submitted to the global database will be openly available on the WHO Disability and Rehabilitation web pages.

The CBR global database will facilitate greater exchange of knowledge and information among the CBR community. WHO will use this global database to update enlisted members on the Organization's activities related to disability and rehabilitation with a specific focus on CBR. All submissions to the global database are the views of the respective organisations or individuals providing the information and are not verified by WHO.

The form may be accessed at www.who.int/disabilities/cbr/global_database_form/en/index.html.

Invitation to contribute artwork: can you create an image which reflects the global needs and rights of people with spinal cord injury? WHO is presently seeking an image for the cover of a major international report, International perspectives on spinal cord injury. This image could be a drawing, painting, photograph or other image, either abstract or representational, which draws attention to people living with spinal cord injury. For more information go to http://who.int/disabilities/media/news/2012/23_03/en/index.html.

Implementing inclusive education

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities requires the development of an inclusive education system for all. This revised and expanded second edition of Implementing Inclusive Education examines the adoption of the Convention and provides examples, both through illustrated case studies and on the accompanying DVDs, of how inclusive education systems for all children have been established in pockets throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.

Inclusion in education is a process of enabling all children to learn and participate effectively within mainstream school systems, without segregation. It is about shifting the focus from altering disabled people to fit into society to transforming society, and the world, by changing attitudes, removing barriers and providing the right support
