November 2011

From the President and Secretary General

Last week saw the first face-to-face meeting of WCPT's new Executive Committee since we were together in June in Amsterdam. We discussed WCPT's mission, vision and objectives in depth and considered the exciting projects and plans to be undertaken before the next General Meeting in 2015. It was a very productive meeting and, as always, our member organisations will play a vital role in the delivery and success of these projects as we continue to build a strong international physical therapy community. We will be in touch with member organisations soon with the details of WCPT's work priorities over the next few years.

Kind regards
Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The United Nations (UN) has designated the 3rd December the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the theme for 2011 Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development

Experience shows that when persons with disabilities are empowered to participate and lead the process of development, their entire community benefits and opportunities are created for everyone – with or without a disability.

For further information about the day and events taking place around the world go the UN Enable website at www.un.org/disabilities/default.asp?id=111.

To find out more about disability and function go to the WCPT website at www.wcpt.org/node/27545. WCPT endorses The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

New CPD partner

As part of WCPT's ongoing efforts to offer physical therapists a range of opportunities to learn, maintain, develop and enhance their skills and knowledge, the Confederation continues to team up with continuing professional development (CPD) providers.

WCPT's new partnership with Greatseminarsonline (GSO) brings the latest research and evidence based treatment information to clinicians around the world. GSO's online continuing education offers a wide variety of courses from seating and mobility, to vestibular rehabilitation. Courses include real patients and the latest research in rehabilitation.

International Volunteer Day

WCPT would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have given their time, knowledge and experience to the Confederation and its member organisations over the years.  Without the support of these countless individuals WCPT would have been unable to achieve many of the projects and initiatives it has undertaken since 1951. Thank you!

International volunteer day is on the 5th December. For more information about the day go to www.unv.org/what-we-do/intl-volunteer-day/.

World Conference on Social Determinants of Health

The Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health was adopted during the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health on 21st October 2011. The declaration expresses global political commitment for the implementation of a social determinants of health approach to reduce health inequities and to achieve other global priorities.

The declaration acknowledges the importance of international cooperation for the benefit of all people and the important role that multilateral organisations have in articulating norms and guidelines and identifying good practices. Governments are resolved to take action on social determinants of health which were also recognised as being a critical consideration in addressing NCDs during the UN Summit on NCDs in September in New York.
