World Physical Therapy Day 2012 in Nepal

From the President and Secretary General

World Physical Therapy Day is just days away, and we can't wait to find out what physical therapists around the world have in store for us this time! Every year, you astound us with your ingenuity, commitment and sheer sense of good fun in finding new and effective ways to communicate the value of the profession. It's not too late to organise something now – there are some last minute ideas below.

We will both be in Taichung, Taiwan for World Physical Therapy Day, attending the congress of WCPT's Asia Western Pacific Region. The theme for the congress is "Health promotion through physical therapy", which couldn't be more appropriate given that the theme of our international day is "Movement for Health". We're greatly looking forward to spending time with so many colleagues from the region examining the ways in which our profession promotes health, and we wish all of you success in your efforts on 8th September.

Kind regards,
Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers

If you would like to use all or part of this e-letter for your own newsletters/websites then please feel free. We need your assistance to reach the profession around the world, so please send this e-update to your members.

With just over a week left until World Physical Therapy Day on 8th September, here are some last minute ideas to mark the day:

·         publish this week's World Physical Therapy Day press release: Physical therapists helping people become fit at every age www.wcpt.org/node/30125

·         publish the article by WCPT President, Marilyn Moffat http://bit.ly/192zEAD

·         print our ready-made "Fit for the future" posters and leaflet to display in your work place www.wcpt.org/wptday-posters

·         use one of our e-cards to send your own World Physical Therapy Day message to your colleagues and patients www.wcpt.org/wptday-ecards

·         add a Movement for Health web ad to your website www.wcpt.org/wptday-logos

Good luck with all your activities and celebrations and we look forward to receiving your photos and reports (send to info@wcpt.org).

WCPT Congress 2015: Call for focused symposia

The deadline to submit a focused symposium proposal is now just one month away on 30th September. WCPT is calling on physical therapists who are leaders/experts in their fields to propose focused symposium sessions on cutting edge professional topics for the next WCPT congress, to be held in Singapore in 2015. Full details about the call and how to submit a proposal can be accessed at www.wcpt.org/congress/fs.

WHO: new reports

World Health Report image

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published two new reports:

The World Health Report 2013: Research for universal health coverage. The goal of universal health coverage is to ensure that all people obtain the health services they need - prevention, promotion, treatment, rehabilitation and palliation - without risk of financial ruin or impoverishment, now and in the future. www.who.int/whr/en/

Guidance on mental health care after trauma: new clinical protocols and guidelines are being released to enable effective mental health care for adults and children exposed to trauma and loss. Physical therapists, particularly those working in emergency situations, may find this useful. However, we should not forget that trauma and loss can occur anywhere in the world and physical therapists, as first contact practitioners, all need to be suitably prepared. http://bit.ly/18koepG

UK physios to prescribe independently

This month saw a world first in physical therapy with UK physiotherapists given the legal go-ahead to be able to independently prescribe medicines, without a doctor authorising their decision. Read the full story at www.wcpt.org/node/101751.

WCPT annual report

WCPT's annual report for 2012 is now available at www.wcpt.org/node/27528#annual. It highlights key activities the Confederation carried out and reports against its Strategic Plan for the four-year period 2011-2015, as decided by the Executive Committee in November 2011, with priorities and objectives incorporated from the General Meeting of June 2011.
