From the President and Secretary General

Over the past month many reports from the London 2012 Olympic Games have highlighted the role of physical therapists in sport. With the Paralympic Games now underway disability is being brought to public attention in a high profile, positive and inspiring way. Physical therapists are instrumental in working with people and populations to optimise functioning and minimise disability. WCPT works with the profession and international organisations to advance the rights of disabled people. To access relevant disability resources visit the WCPT website at www.wcpt.org/node/27545.

World Physical Therapy Day provides the opportunity to promote the profession and build further on the recent positive stories. Join in and celebrate on 8th September.

Kind regards
Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers

Physical therapy in the spotlight

With many reports on the teams at this month's London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics including the physical therapist/s, this international sporting event has succeeded in highlighting the vital role the profession plays in sports.

If you are interested in sports physical therapy see www.biomedcentral.com/series/asnem to access an article collection covering recent advances in sports medicine that have both broad interest and high clinical relevance to athletes, physicians, general practitioners, physical therapists and other sports and exercise specialists.

Last month The Lancet published a Series on physical activity. The Series reviews current levels of physical activity and trends worldwide including why some people are active and why some are not, evidence-based strategies for effective physical activity promotion, and how a multi-sector and systems-wide approach that goes way beyond health will be critical to increase population-levels of activity worldwide. All articles are available free of charge and many will have a direct relevance to the activities that are being held around the world to mark World Physical Therapy Day.

The International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) is launching a web-based teaching and educational resource on 4th September. The Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) e-learning will specifically address the current lack of professional development opportunities for health professionals involved in SCI management.
