| | From the President and Secretary General WCPT provides resources and links on its website that give reliable information about the profession and health issues around the world, thereby supporting the work of our member organisations. For example, from the profile page of each member organisation you will find links to WHO's health statistics and non communicable disease profile for that country. Because the information is presented in a consistent way it is possible to compare the situation across countries. The most recent addition to the resources on the member organisation profile pages is information gathered through WCPT's data collection project. Reliable information about the profession has been sought from member organisations and is now available on many of their pages on WCPT's website (see the country profile tab). This is an ongoing project and we hope that all member organisations will have a profile page in due course. However, it is already serving as a valuable resource in developing a profile of physical therapy around the world. If you have any questions about this work contact Catherine Sykes csykes@wcpt.org. Kind regards Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers If you would like to use all or part of this e-letter for your own newsletters/websites then please feel free. We need your assistance to reach the profession around the world, so please send this e-update to your members. Send us your photographs! As part of our World Physical Therapy Day celebrations, WCPT launched a photo competition on 7th September. We are looking for entries which capture the day's Movement for Health theme, showing the importance of physical activity and the contribution the profession makes to keeping populations well, mobile and independent. All entries must be submitted electronically (as a JPEG photograph) with the original artwork created in one of the following forms: - photography
- painting
- drawing
All images should be taken at the best quality available (preferably 300dpi). If a photograph of a drawing or painting is being submitted, the artwork must be clearly visible and well lit. The competition is open to physical therapists and their patients. A maximum of 3 entries may be submitted by any one individual. The closing date for the competition is 5th December 2012. Please email entries (or direct any enquiries) to info@wcpt.org. For full details of the competition go to www.wcpt.org/photo-competition. WCPT congress papers in Physiotherapy journal Capture the Facture is a global campaign developed by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) to facilitate the implementation of coordinated, multi-disciplinary models of care for secondary fracture prevention. IOF believes this is the single most important thing that can be done to directly improve patient care and reduce spiraling fracture related healthcare costs worldwide. The campaign aims to: - raise awareness of coordinator-based, post-fracture systems for preventing second fractures
- provide internationally endorsed standards for best practice
- facilitate change at a national level
It will do this by: - developing a best practice framework
- organising an international coalition of partners and endorsers
- developing a website and interactive map to house all information
- creating and sharing implementation guides and toolkits
- marketing and communicating the campaign globally
- piloting a grant program for developing systems

WHO and UNICEF: new discussion paper This month WHO and UNICEF jointly produced Early Childhood Development and Disability: a discussion paper. It aims to stimulate discussion, planning and action on issues related to disability, early childhood development and related interventions. The paper provides an overview of disability in early childhood and highlights the importance of providing opportunities during this period to ensure children with disabilities can reach their development potential and participate meaningfully in their home, schools and communities. The evidence presented underscores the urgent need to strengthen and scale up early childhood development initiatives for young children with disabilities and their families. Access the paper at http://tinyurl.com/bs5kqwb. The latest issue of the United Nations Enable Newsletter is now available online at www.un.org/disabilities.
