February 2013

From the President and Secretary General

Thank you to everyone who entered WCPT's Movement for Health photography competition, which was launched as part of the 2012 World Physical Therapy Day celebrations. In keeping with the theme we were looking for creative interpretations showing the importance of physical activity and the contribution the profession makes to keeping populations well, mobile and independent.

The winning image was taken by physical therapist Alex Martin, when he was working in France as a volunteer ski instructor for Association Sportive Handisport du Centre de Rééducation et Appareillage à Valenton (ASHCRAV), an organisation dedicated to the discovery, learning and practice of different sports by people with amputations.

To see the winning entry and the runners-up go to www.wcpt.org/gallery.

Kind regards
Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers

If the historic clips of WCPT's first ever congress have left you wanting to see more, this week we have also uploaded the full 17 min video to WCPT's YouTube channel. Watch this recently found film recorded 60 years ago at www.youtube.com/theWCPT.

Read the story of how the film was discovered in the latest issue of WCPT News at www.wcpt.org/node/52800.

WCPT project on disability access

We are looking for physical therapists or student physical therapists to join a project advisory group on disability access. If you had a disability prior to entering a professional entry level physical therapy education programme and/or acquired a disability requiring accommodations in the workplace to continue or return to practice and are interested in this opportunity, please send an email to Tracy Bury, WCPT Director Professional Policy tbury@wcpt.org. Please provide details of your current education/working circumstances; geographical location; relevant experience and circumstances, nature of your disability; and a brief statement about what you could bring to the advisory group. Please respond by 11th March.

This project has arisen from a motion at the WCPT General Meeting in June 2011 that "WCPT encourage a rights-based approach to disability in terms of access to physical therapist professional entry-level education and support for practice". The project aims to raise awareness about the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the implications for the profession for entry level education and practice for physical therapists.

Series on non-communicable diseases

The Lancet has just published its latest series on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) http://bit.ly/VSNuOF.

This latest series builds on its previous series, and on a landmark high-level United Nations NCD meeting convened in September 2011. The aim of the new series is to set out clear plans for countrywide implementation of NCD plans in the post-Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) era, towards the unified goal of '25 by 25' — reducing NCD mortality 25% worldwide by 2025.

Read more about MDGs at www.un.org/millenniumgoals.

WHO: African Partnerships for Patient Safety
