January 2013

From the President and Secretary General

Recently a film from the first WCPT Congress held 60 years ago in London came to light. It is a poignant reminder of WCPT's heritage and the significant role the congresses have played in our evolution. As we begin 2013, the 60th anniversary of that first congress, planning for our 17th Congress to be held in Singapore in 2015 is well underway. You will shortly receive the first Congress Update including the announcement of the members of the International Scientific Committee, chaired by Aimée Stewart, and providing you with an opportunity to help shape the congress by participating in a survey. So, have a look at highlights from the congress in 1953 (www.youtube.com/user/theWCPT/), provide your ideas for 2015 by participating in our upcoming survey and then start making plans to join us in Singapore.

Kind regards
Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers

New international group

A new group, the International Oncology, Palliative Care, and HIV/AIDS Physical Therapy Association (IOPHPT) has recently been formed.

The group was initiated by a group of interested practitioners meeting at the WCPT Congress in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2011. A core group of individuals have since been communicating online to determine a course of action leading to recognition as a WCPT Subgroup prior to the next General Meeting in Singapore in 2015. For more information about IOPHPT and how you could be involved go to www.wcpt.org/node/49580.

Golden Apple Award

The Golden Apple award honours Health Volunteers Overseas' (HVO) volunteers and members who have made extraordinary contributions to HVO's mission, organisation and/or programme sites. If you know an individual who exemplifies a commitment to HVO, then find out how to nominate them at http://bit.ly/TQLivE. The deadline for nominations is 15th February.

HVO is a network of health care professionals, organisations, corporations and donors united in a common commitment to improving global health through education. For 26 years, HVO has been sending health care professionals overseas to teach and train their counterparts in developing countries.

Access medical case reports

You can now explore thousands of peer-reviewed medical case reports, including content integrated from PubMed Central, via BioMed Central's new resource, Cases Database. It is a freely accessible and continuously updated search interface for clinicians, researchers, teachers and patients.

By bringing case reports together, Cases Database adds value to individual reports, allowing comparison of similar cases, helping to highlight trends and patterns which may help researchers to develop hypotheses which can then be tested by systematic research.
