WCPT E-Update - September 2011

SEPTEMBER 2011
www.wcpt.org [3]

From the President and Secretary General

September saw the launch of the World Health Professions Alliance
Health Improvement Card, as part of its campaign to tackle the burden
of
non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The campaign and card are targeted at
national associations, governments and health professionals with the
aim
of not only changing policy, but providing practical guidance that
helps
individuals lead healthier lives. The card has been warmly received
because it goes beyond talk about change, and provides something
tangible by which people can achieve it.

The launch coincided with another very successful World Physical
Therapy Day. Both the NCD campaign and World PT Day are successfully
drawing attention to the vital role of physical activity in disease
prevention and management. Using tools provided by WCPT and the WHPA,
physical therapists are making a real contribution to changing global
attitudes and health behaviour.

Kind regards,
MARILYN MOFFAT AND BRENDA J MYERS

World Physical Therapy Day

We have now received many reports of events that took place to

Reports will be added to the WCPT website over the next few weeks.

New on WCPT website

WCPT has a new keynote paper on direct access. It is available to
download as a PDF at www.wcpt.org/node/27527#direct_access [5].

The policy area of the website has been revised with all policies now
listed A-Z. These new versions incorporate the edits made at WCPTs
General Meeting and can be viewed at www.wcpt.org/policy-list [6]. The
new guidelines approved at the GM will also be available very soon and
include:

* clinical education
* CPD
* education accreditation/recognition
* faculty qualifications
* legislation/regulation/recognition
* records management.

Practical NCD guide launched

The World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) has launched a Health
Improvement Card [7] as a simple, easy-to-use, universal educational
tool for adults to assess and record their status related to common NCD
risk factors. It empowers individuals and their health professional to
take a proactive approach in preventing non-communicable diseases
(NCDs)
and associated disability.

It is currently available to download in English and Spanish versions
at www.whpa.org/ncd_campaign_health_improvement_card.htm [8]. A French
version is in production and other language versions may become
available.

The Health Improvement Card examines:

* lifestyle/behavioural (four main risk factors: healthy diet,
physical activity, tobacco use and alcohol use)
* metabolic/biometric (four important body measures: BMI, fasting
blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure)
* action plan and goals targeting risk factors

Further details about the WHPA NCD campaign may be found at
www.whpa.org/ncd_campaign.htm [9].

WCPT became a member of the WHPA in May 2010. The Alliance brings
together the global organisations representing the world's dentists,
nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists and physicians. For further
information about the WHPA go to www.whpa.org/whpa.htm [10].
